Latest Super-Bike build; the Van Nicholas Eurus

After covering well over 100,000km around Europe it was about time this well loved 13yr old bike was treated to a full makeover.

1. Frame sanded down and polished like new

2. New Decals applied

3. Campagnolo Shamal Ultra wheels + Vittoria Corsa Control tyres

4. Full Campagnolo Super Record group-set (Record chainset & chain) with super record Ti 11/25 cassette and 39/53 up front.

5. Cinelli NEOS finishing kit (bars, stem, seatpost)

6. Speedplay pave pedals and Specialized Power mimic saddle

7. Fizik tempo bartape, Arundel stainless steel cages, K-edge out front Garmin mount, Tacx crash bung, Campagnolo water bidon.

This is most definitely the coolest and sexiest build I’ve created so far. Stunning from every angle and with faultless mechanical engineering and performance. 100% super-bike and a pure work of art.

Nothing Rides, Looks or Lasts like Titanium!

Cannondale Super Six Evo

£243 ‘Farsports’ (Far East) integrated aero-bars. Not as straightforward as described. Ideally designed for Di2 or Etap as the cabling holes are very small and not really ideal for two cable outers.

This conversion on a Cannondale Super Six Evo hydraulic proved ridiculously hard to thread the hydraulics through the two tiny ports inside the headset spacers and using the Park hydraulic threading cable would not clear the exit holes near shifters!!

Solution - to marry these bars to the current headset spacers requires a 3D printed top spacer which I drilled two exit holes into (very tough material) and threaded hydraulics through which allowed a cleaner run to shifters. I taped the gearing outers under the bars which looks neat and hidden too.

The steerer required one of the supplied spacer tubes fitting and a new expander plug to use the supplied top cap and a couple of micro spacers to take up the play.

Fabric bar tape to finish and looks good, def improvement on the old bars for sure.

Can’t wait to ride her…

Trek Madone SLR9 - £12.4K super-bike in for new bars following high-speed altercation with a van!
rather tricky job indeed seeing as the bars and cables are completely integrated into the stem and frame and swapping the bars means cutting and removing the hydraulics and removing the Di2 wiring and replacing both. Precision job with intricate and fiddly skills required with the right tools and sequences to follow.

Finally finished assembling the latest weapon in my performance armoury. Ta Da, The Dedacciai Nerissimo 12-speed Campag ‘Red rocket’.

Hard to find engineering excellence in this modern era with designers having way too much influence in design rather than being engineering led. This gorgeous super stiff frameset still keeps external gear cabling whilst also allowing for Di2 intervals if required.

Deda frame-sets have super smooth internal tubing too, (achieved by injecting foam) rather than the many complicated frame-sets who use an internal bladder to form their shapes which results in rough intervals and nightmare cable friction problems with their rough innards and ridiculously angled cable runs.

The Campy 12-speed drivetrain is an absolute dream in operation, still 11/34 range at the back but with way fewer steps to achieve that than a clunky (ier) 11 speed with the same range. The gear changes are positive clicks with the USP of being able to upshift 3 gears at a time and downshift 5 gears at a time (if you’ve not tried this it’s simply awesome)

Campag Zonda wheels are still the best everyday wheel-set on the market and fitted with the Corsa Control rubber are faultless for everyday riding. Finishing kit is about as good as it gets for performance, and all up weight is a reasonable 7.78kg ready to roll

Top Tools & Tech

Inner tube sealant (NOT tyre sealant) - The difference:Whilst every manufacturer will sing the praises of their tubeless wheels and bike set-ups, the truth is that for road bikes ‘with high tyre pressures’ they just don’t work! For mtn bikes ‘high volume low pressure’ they are great, for road bikes ‘low volume high pressure’ the sealant does not get enough time to seal the hole before being ejected all over the bike, road and rider ha ha (I’ve witnessed dozens of such scenarios). There is also the faff of trying to seat your tubeless tyres after filling with sealant as unless they are new and you are very lucky requires a compressor or tubeless air-can type pump, and often the skill and dexterity of a brain surgeon to install the valve core without loosing air pressure and unseating the tyre bead. Numerous people including myself on events and rides have had to fit an inner tube to a tubless tyre which deflated and this is a right mess! The answer (maybe) - Inner tube sealant, squirted into the inner tube by simply deflating the tube, removing the valve with the simple supplied tool, squirting a couple of ounces into each tube, replacing the valve core, inflating, spinning the wheel and done! Took me 10 minutes to prep both wheels and - no mess, no fancy pump and so simple a triathlete could do it. The verdict - It works! I installed the sealant and set off on an adventurous 100k ride through some very stunning quiet lanes complete with pot holes, thorns and even a section through a farmers field to avoid a road closure! I did notice a slight sluggishness to my accelerations but overall for most people the additional weight to the rotating mass would not be noticeable. On returning home I was aware that my front tyre was feeling slightly bouncy and there was definitely some air-loss from my usual 100psi which confirmed that I had suffered a puncture, my tyre was now 60psi, but the inner tube sealant had worked! No mess, no faff and even if it had failed I would still have just had to replace the inner tube as normal and inflate with my CO2 canister which is still only a two minute job for the experienced rider. For many people this solution could be just what they need to give them that little bit more confidence to venture further afield without worry. It’s obviously not infallible but it certainly works in my experience. Gravel riders and mtn bikers should still probably stick to their tubeless setups but for roadies, this is definitely worth considering, especially in winter or on challenging routes and roads. Another observation is for those running really tight wheel/tyre combinations then this liquid magic might just save the day when tasked with the near impossible task of changing an inner tube on a cold winters day with a seemingly impossibly tight tyre removal or for those with weak thumbs etc.

Bit of toolbox husbandry this evening - decided to keep my most used ‘small tools’ in a tool roll and then the smaller ‘medium use’ tools I kept in my Park Tools tool box I’ve cut into foam and divided into 4-layers that fit snug into the Park Tool Box. Longer daily use tools in a tool bucket with oils and lubes etc and remaining less used specialist tools in a tool chest. Hopefully this will keep me best organised and better accountable. #toolboxwars
