Tour of the Irish Lake District Sept 3-8 2023

Damon Blackband

Tour of the Irish Lake District (Kingfisher Trail)

  • Sunday, September 3, 20235:00 PM
    Friday, September 8, 20239:00 AM

The Kingfisher Cycle Trail was the first long distance cycle trail in Ireland and follows minor country roads through the border counties of Fermanagh, Leitrim, Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan. The trail travels through landscape dotted with rivers and lakes and is without doubt one of the most unspoilt and stunning areas of the British Isles.

Pedal Lincolnshire / Imp Adventures will spend 4-days cycling around the beautiful Irish Lake District in Sept 2023, starting and finishing in reputedly Britains friendliest town - Enniskillen.

This unique mixture of lake-lands, canal side tracks, rolling hills, leafy lane-ways and mountain climbs make the Kingfisher Trail the ideal choice for all levels of Cyclist. The Kingfisher Cycle Trail covers approximately 430kms of public roadway winding through rural countryside, Lake-lands, Atlantic Coast and Mountain Tral

Enniskillen Castle

Quiet country lanes wind through patchwork farmland, past glistening lakes and along mighty rivers. Wondrous caves and limestone hillsides reveal thousands of years of geology while ruined castles and majestic country estates show how life would have been in bygone days – cycling the Kingfisher Cycle Trail is an adventure that combines the very best of Ireland’s nature and history.
.
You will ride through Fermanagh, Leitrim, Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan counties. Each with countless loughs (lakes) both big and small, as well as canals and rivers, such as the River Shannon, the longest river in the British Isles. Keep your eyes peeled whilst you cycle and you might spot the illustrious kingfisher darting above the waters. The route is named after this beautiful bird which calls its lakes, waterways, and open countryside home.

Devenish Tower Co Fermanagh

The Northern Loop is a 176 km circular from Enniskillen around Lower Lough Erne lake. At 254 km, the Southern Loop is the longest section, exploring the Cuilcagh Mountains and the lake-lands of Lough Erne and Lough Melvin, it also explores the rural uplands between Enniskillen and Garrison whilst also visiting County Monaghan’s countryside from the town of Clones.

From the plantations of the 16th century to turbulent border disputes, this area is steeped in history. Humans have shaped the landscapes here for many thousands of years, evidence of which is still seen today in the crumbling castle walls, ruined abbeys, and mystical stone circles.

Route starts in Enniskillen and tours two x loops, both anti-clockwise in direction

Aside from the popular Bencroy Pass, the route doesn’t include any big climbs. You gently rise and fall through the picturesque countryside on minor roads and pretty lanes. You should be a confident road user as there are some sections in busier traffic. The surfaces are always paved so any bike is suitable for this journey.

Our trip includes hotel accommodation on the evening prior to the start in Enniskillen and at the finish in Enniskillen as well as three nights during the challenge. All meals and rest stop snacks are included as are the professional services of cycle guides, medics, mechanics and support drivers as required. Participants will be required to drop their bikes off in Lincoln and collect them from there following the event, so all they have to do is arrange their flight to Belfast and catch the 2hr 20 min coach for the scenic drive to Enniskillen. (several coaches run daily inc Sun direct from Belfast Europa Coach Park to Enniskillen and cost approx £15-20 each way) Places are limited and all hotels will soon be booked so please register early to avoid disappointment. Bicycle Maintenance & Repair Courses in Lincolnshire (Level 1 & Level 2 certificates)

Damon Blackband

Industry standard in professional maintenance

Bicycle Maintenance classes - Level 1 (Roadside Repair)

Pedal Lincolnshire are offering a level one ‘Roadside Repair’ 1-day bicycle maintenance course that covers roadside emergency bicycle repairs and maintenance, that can be completed without the need of using a professional cycle workshop, either at home or when out riding, using just a few basic tools. The aim is to help each rider get more from their bike and become more self-sufficient and give them the confidence to ride further afield with less worry about becoming stranded..

It is meant as a starting point for those unfamiliar with cycle repair to gain the confidence to be able to tackle basic emergency repair jobs at the side of the road, learn some new skills, pick up tips and also learn which jobs would be better performed by a qualified cycle mechanic.

It also allows those attending an opportunity to handle and use a number of key tools and to learn which works best with their bike and what ideally should be carried in their emergency tool caddy.

Basic Course Information

Just some of the multi-tools you will get to use on the course

Bicycle Maintenance classes - Level 2 (Ride Leader)

Pedal Lincolnshire are offering a level-two (Ride Leader) 1-day bicycle maintenance course for those that have completed the ‘level 1’ introductory course. This more advanced course covers areas of bicycle repair and maintenance that can be completed without the need of using a professional cycle workshop, both at home and when out riding, using basic tools and a few additional items. The aim is to help experienced club cyclists (and keen individuals) get more from their cycling and become more self-sufficient whilst being able to act as a ‘Ride Leader’ with the ability to assist others and offer advice as well.

It is a natural progression for those more familiar with cycle repair to learn new skills so to be able to tackle more advanced jobs, and pick up tips and knowledge and also learn which jobs would be better performed by a qualified cycle mechanic.

It also allows those attending a better understanding of the terminology, trouble shooting, set-up and adjustment of a bicycle, what parts are most likely to need regular replacement and how to care for the bicycle for optimal performance and reliable cycling.

Lunches in Kathmandu, tips, drinks, clothing and equipment. (hot showers and internet can be purchased each night at a reasonable rate if required)

Notes
Having guided this trek several times now I am 100% confident that the above itinerary is the best option for ensuring everybody makes EBC and Kala Pathar with two essential acclimatisation days on the ascent and one on the return leg, these can also be used in case of bad weather or illness which often sees less prepared groups missing out on Base Camp success.
Acclimatisation is vital to any EBC attempt and the key to this is a gradual height gain with essential acclimatisation days added in where appropriate, on this trip your oxygen saturation stats will be monitored each night and action taken if necessary to ensure that you are on track for EBC success. Your leader has been to high altitude (over 5000m) more than 50 times with groups so is very experienced in managing altitude related problems)
The overnight tea houses are the most comfortable on the trek and have been used numerous times by Imp Adventures ensuring that each night we have hot showers and internet (small charge) and our own ‘a la carte’ choice of meal each day (unlike other larger treks who have to all eat the same choice each night due to numbers etc)

Imp Adventures have been using the same excellent local Ground Agent for 10 years now and have always been treated to the most fantastic service and best logistics and local guides and Sherpas availible both on the trail and back in Kathmandu. Time will be made prior to the trek for participants to buy quality Down Sleeping Bags and Down trekking jackets at bargain rates if required.

Dream Challenges Trek for Troops 2020 work

Damon Blackband

An interview with our ex-military trek for troops leader

June 2020 will see us trekking along the World War One Western Front for military charities. One of the many awesome things about Trek for Troopsis that we’re led by an awesome Challenge Leader, Damon Blackband. With experience in the military and having worked with loads of our treks and cycles, we couldn’t have dreamed of a better guide for our Great War challenge.

In this interview, Damon lets us in on what to expect from our trek from France to Normandy, relays some fab stories from his military past and gives his top tips for the trek ahead.

first off, can you tell us a bit about yourself?
Hi everyone, Damon here, your guide for Trek for Troops. In a nut-shell, I’m a 51-years young Ex-Army Professional Events Manager, Mountaineering and Cycling Guide, Supply Teacher and Cycle Mechanic. I’m currently living in Lincolnshire with my equally adventurous partner, Liz, and our adorable Springer Spaniel, ‘Molly’.

what was your role in the military and how was your time with them?
I joined the Army Air Corps in 1985 and enjoyed 23 fantastic years travelling all over the world learning new skills, meeting incredible people and sharing life changing moments. I retired in 2007 as the Sergeant Major of Flying Wing at the school of Army Aviation in Hampshire where I was a Helicopter Gunnery Instructor.

any favourite anecdotes?
Lots of memorable moments, both comical and heart breaking. One potentially very serious, but later funny incident stands out.

Whilst serving in Bosnia during the Balkans War, I was approaching an abandoned trench system with a few colleagues, when we noticed a local priest waving and shouting at us from a nearby road, which we foolishly ignored. It was only when we arrived at the trenches that we noticed a blank sign in front of the trenches, which on the reverse, had the words ‘MINES’ painted on in red, ha ha! How we laughed!

what would you say are your top 5 landmarks that we pass on trek for troops?
Very hard question to nominate just 5 top locations with so many heart-wrenching tributes and memorials all along the vast front lines and battlefields!

• No 1 would have to be the ‘Last Post’ ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres.
The other most memorable sites amongst numerous incredible sights would probably be:
• The Red Dragon Memorial to the 38th Welsh Division near Mametz Wood,
• The chilling Lochnagar Crater
• The French memorials at St Nazaire and
• The total devastation along Vimy Ridge.

you know a great deal about the history behind these landmarks – and of the battles of the somme – could you summarise for us what exactly went on and the significance of these battles?
WW1 was truly a Global War with millions left dead on both sides. It featured new technologies in warfare, which created more destruction than had ever been seen before. (Planes, Tanks, Gas, Bombs etc.)

The Somme was the largest battle on the Western Front and was intended to hasten the end of the War. Instead, it reached a stalemate, with over a million dead and wounded, making it one of the bloodies battles in human history. The British Army suffered 57,470 dead and wounded on the first day of the offensive alone!

what are the highlights of the challenge for you?
The highlights for me are the incredible, individual stories of gallantry recollected in the graveyard books at each cemetery. I always read through these, before paying my respects at their numerous gravestones: I try to imagine their incredible heroics and brave actions, amongst a sea of devastation.

what would you say is the most beautiful spot on the route?
The whole WW1 front line is incredibly well-maintained and presented and a fitting tribute to the thousands who will never grow old. If I were to recall just one incredible view, it would probably be the views from the twin limestone towers. Perched high upon Vimy Ridge, to the Canadian Corps who fought and died in this spot.

do you have any tips on training?
My best advice would be to ensure that you have well-broken-in, comfortable, lightweight, fabric boots that you are happy walking 100km in! As for the fitness aspects, I am sure that so long as you are a relatively active person, with a few consecutive double-digit walks under your belt, you will be just fine.

what kind of food will we be tucking into on the trek?
As usual with Dream Challenges treks, we will no doubt be enjoying large breakfasts to see us through the day’s challenges. En route, we’ll have a mixture of picnic and café lunches in scenic spots. In the evening, we’ll tuck into a meal of top local cuisine and socialise over a few glasses of the local beers and wines, which the French and Belgiques are famous for!

what’s the accommodation like?
We’ll stay in comfortable, mid-range hotels that offer clean and friendly accommodation. No unnecessary frills on this sort of challenge.

what do you prioritise when finalising an itinerary?

My favourite subject and my favourite part of the challenge – Understanding the objectives and the participants’ expectations, thorough research, planning and reconnaissance, realistic achievable itineraries with outstanding and memorable objectives, coupled with excellent logistics, in a safe and enjoyable environment.

having worked with us on several challenges now, what would you say is your favourite thing about them?

Helmuth Van Moltke famously wrote ‘No plan of operations reaches with any certainty beyond the first encounter with the enemy’s main force’.

Whilst Dream Challenges aren’t in the business of fighting battles, I am always confident that all possible preparation and planning has been covered to ensure that their challenges run as seamlessly and enjoyably as possible, and that as a leader, I am always supported and prepared for any eventuality!

This ensures that everyone ultimately enjoys their challenge and that I get to enjoy a beer each evening with the participants in a warm and friendly atmosphere.

find out more about trek for troops

It’s needless to say, Damon knows what he’s doing. Nothing short of Challenge Master, we are delighted to have him leading another Trek for Troops.
