Klettersteig Scrambles in the Austrian Alps
The French call it 'Via Ferrata', the Germans – 'Klettersteig', both mean the same thing - metal pathway' or in simple terms 'fixed protection' a means to safely ascend rock faces and narrow ridges using a number of fixed metal steps, staples, cables and placements. Invented during the Second World War to allow mountain troops to safely ascend steep mountain ridges carrying heavy loads so as to dominate the valleys and passes from above.
Following the war the Alpine clubs saw the potential for these metal paths and capitalized on the in-situ fixed protection, improving it and adding to it on the way to make a series of daring and challenging routes where previously only extreme climbers had dared to venture.
Klettersteig's and Via Ferrata's now come in a variety of types and styles, from extreme vertical sport routes to lengthy and sparsely equipped mountain routes, and more recently elaborate and intricate gymnastic routes equipped with slides, ladders and tunnels to scare and stimulate the ever devoted followers of this relatively safe but enthralling mountain sport.
Our adventure will introduce you to a handful of choice Klettersteig's, including both sport and high mountain paths, using both mini buses and cable cars to access the best that Austria as to offer. The routes are located in some of Austria's most stunning valleys and mountainsides, with breathtaking views and stunning panoramas opening up at every turn of the route.
This activity is suitable for novices with moderate fitness who have a good head for heights and a sense of adventure.
